The term “like riding a bike” usually means something that is easy or an action that you could repeat even if you haven’t done it in a while. To me, the term strikes fear. I guess that when God made me the only thing that he wanted me to be on or in with wheels is a car. When I was young(er), I veered into a car that was trying to pass me. (I know, skills!) Some time later, I was riding my cousin’s bike, which was way too tall for me. We were travelling downhill at the speed of light. There sat a mail truck, waiting patiently for us to pass. Little did the mailman know, I couldn’t stop… or reach the ground. So, head on into the mail truck I went. I was banged up, the bike was not so lucky.
My boys want to start riding their bikes to school this year. I needed to time the trip and to see if they could make it by themselves. That meant, we all needed to make the trip together. After much pessimism, I borrowed a friend’s bike. I assured her that I would stay away from the postal service. We set out for the two and a half mile trip.
At first, I was a little wobbly and nervous on the turns. I was truly enjoying the ride, but all the while dreading the end. The stop and the dismount are my downfall, literally! It’s been so long since I rode a bike that there were a few times when I was pedalling backwards hoping to find breaks. (Yes, I saw the hand breaks, but reflex went to the feet.)
I managed to stop and dismount a few times on this journey. Other than the steady incline on the way back that made my legs feel like, well awful, I had a good time. It made me feel silly for waiting so long to conquer the bicycle. It makes me wonder how many things we put off or don’t do because we fear the outcome. Most of the time, the outcome is not how we imagine it will be, but we have to take that first step to try. Is there something that you want to conquer? What are you waiting for? Say a prayer and go for it!
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
